    “Jesus Loveth Katy”

I was watching a program on the E channel (don’t ask) on the rise to fame of Katy Perry. What an amazing slot it was and it revealed a whole lot of “stuff” that no one really knew or even needed to know; from her early family years in the church and traveling with her Pastor father, to her attempt at the Contemporary Christian music scene, to her rip roaring success of a star that we now know her to be. The slot of her singing on stage after releasing her Gospel album at the age of 17 was just a bit sorry and probably had the whole world screaming “stone her”. The sheltered Christian life aside, one thing that really got me was that the insert was compiled from a non-Christian point of view with the reference to common Christian words that fly off our lips being termed as ludicrous by them. They were saying things like “tongues” and “spirit” and “worship” in a tone of voice suggesting cultism and pointing fingers and jeering! At times they would repeat a word with the tone showing they had NO idea what it meant.

It really made me think that very often as Christians our choice of “Christianese” words in an everyday environment often leaves those around us scratching their heads from all the “wierdism.” For us it’s pretty normal and even if we aren’t using typical King Jamesisms, our “normal” speech is actually far from normal. So in the insert, a lot was said about Katy Perry’s dad, the “traveling old fashion Pastor” when the only thing that rang through the whole insert was that he constantly tried to offer his children the best and to set them up for success. Throughout the insert this was a point of ridicule and was often said that he was only trying to brainwash them, yet after her first hit single “i kissed a girl” and her undoubted success, he still came alongside her and supported her and even travelled with her… This was his “little girl” and everything she did he was proud of. He seemed to change his image a little over the time and yet still got the target set on his forehead by the media.

I wonder how many non-Christians listen in on our convos and are totally lost or thrown off by our standard vocab? It made me think very hard about my choice of words and even the way I structure my speech.

If we as Christians want to be relevant a lot of thought needs to be given to how we share our Faith and what words we use. You should too….

Your justified, sanctified, glorified, spirit filled brother in Christ :)
